Of the many bigger islands in the Swedish archipelago, the ones closest to Stockholm are inhabited year-round and considered idyllic suburbs of the capital. These islands provide a refreshing back-to-nature experience, but remain very connected to the city via frequent boats and steamers.
The island of Himmerfjarden is home to one of the best restaurants in Stockholm, the Oaxen Krog. This restaurant is ranked 32 out of the 50 best restaurants in the world, according to Restaurant Magazine. The chefs here have pioneered the use of local organic ingredients including fish, wild garlic and seaweed, and the restaurant also runs a small hotel that is located on a 1935 vintage ship. Fjaderholmarna is another tiny island that is less than 20 minutes by boat from Stockholm. It also features an excellent restaurant called Fjaderhomarnas Krog, which is even open at Christmas for the traditional julbord, or smorgasbord.
